Frequently asked questions
Which civics test will I take, 2008 or 2025?
It depends on when you filed Form N-400. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 test (128 questions, up to 20 asked, 12 correct to pass). If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 test (100 questions, up to 10 asked, 6 correct to pass).
How many questions do I need to get right?
For the 2025 test, 12 correct answers out of up to 20 questions. For the 2008 test, 6 out of up to 10. Applicants who qualify for the 65/20 consideration answer 10 questions from a list of 20 and need 6 correct.
Do I have to give every answer on the list?
No. For most questions, one answer from the list is enough. A few questions ask for two or three items, and the question tells you how many.
Which answers change?
Answers about current officeholders: the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, your senators, your representative and your governor. As of October 26, 2026, USCIS lists Donald J. Trump (President), JD Vance (Vice President), Mike Johnson (Speaker) and John Roberts (Chief Justice).
Can I take the civics test in my own language?
Only if you qualify for an exception: for example the 65/20 special consideration (age 65+ and a green card holder for 20+ years), or the 50/20 and 55/15 age-and-residence exemptions from the English requirement. Otherwise the test is in English.
